The idea behind this art piece is a story I came up with. It's the idea that the story continues after the last Rurouni Kenshin movie where after he's had years of having a peaceful life a new enemy emerges that threatens all he loves, hence the beards. I imagined him as an old man getting a bit slower with his moves while striving forward to save people in need.
